Data Collector and auto-caching proxy

If you are using the Data Collector in an auto-caching server environment, the data collector service will need to be restarted because the proxy server information will change. The frequency of the proxy information changing could be as often as every hour/day/week/month.

How the Data Collector works with a proxy:
When you start the Data Collector, it automatically detects the current proxy server, and the Data Collector service will start with the specific proxy server detected and the defined user account with appropriate rights to access the Internet through the proxy server. When the Data Collector is running it will not detect if the proxy server is changed.

If then the proxy server is changed and the Data Collector is not restarted then it will give the error message “Data receiver temporarily offline”, because the Data Collector is still using the proxy server from when it was started initially.

As the Data Collector contacts the server with an interval of 30 minutes, there can be a delay of up to 30 minutes before the message “Data receiver temporarily offline” is received.

When the Data Collector is running, it will not detect if the proxy server has changed.

To detect that the proxy server is changed, the Data Collector must be restarted, this is by design.

Remember, if you use a proxy server then you also need to define a user account with appropriate rights to access the Internet through the proxy server in the Data Collector service.
