Local attached printers (USB / LPT)
Printers locally installed on the PC via LPT / USB are supported by using a program installed on the desktop where the printer is connected. The technical explanation is that Windows, by default, does not transmit data from the local printer to the IP network.
Microsoft supports this data transmission via WMI, but there are many reasons why this is not being used today. HP and other printer vendors have developed software packages that can talk to printers via "PJL" and send the information via standard SNMP protocol over the IP network.
As information becomes available and testing is done for different SNMP agent tools, they will be listed below:
HP - SNMP Proxy Agent (Only supports some HP printers)
HP SNMP Proxy Agent supporting documentation:
- HP WebJetAdmin Proxy Agents
- Discovering PC-Connected devices
Proxy Agent download - Download HP SNMP Agent
If you have HP printers locally installed and want to monitor them, you will need the HP SNMP Proxy Agent on each computer with the locally installed printers.
To get data from a local attached HP printer the printer must be installed using a DOT4 bi-directional capable driver or else it will not work. If the driver is a DOT4 bi-directional capable driver you will first get data from the local attached printer after it has printed a job.
The devices name will change from "HP SNMP Agent" to the device name (Eg: HP LasetJet 4200) after a print job has been performed.
If still no counters, please make sure the HP printer is supported with the HP SNMP Proxy Agent (see PDF documentation)
See this FAQ if you are still having a difficulty seeing the device after installing the HP SNMP Proxy Agent.
Please note "HP WS Pro Proxy Agent" is not supported by JetAdvice data collector.
